weird place to attach another engine, would expect a 5th engine under the wing!

This is an old PanAm 747SP that is used by UT (Pratt & Whitney) to test engines. We had a test engine in the number two spot for a while. It was very big and powerful and went on to fame. The spare engine carriage spot has too much air disturbance. The reason for the location in this case is undisturbed air.

I was the contract safety pilot on this bird a while back and trained the superb crew on the 747.

The 747 will never loose its appeal, a magnificent sight in flight, only equalled by the Airbus A380. However it appears there are real concerns as to the continued production of these two aircraft, especially the 737 range. A great pity if the world looses the 4 engine giants of the skies.
