The "FT" tail code actually has a dual purpose. Several years ago, the US Army took over as primary proprietor of Pope AFB and the base was renamed "Pope Field." Simultaneously, the USAF Air Combat Command HQ, which had been at Pope, was relocated to Moody AFB (KVAD). However, the ACC's 23rd Fighter Group "Flying Tigers" unit remained at Pope Field as a tenant unit. This Combat King II is a part of the 23rd, so the "FT" code stands for both KPOB and also for "Flying Tigers."
