Harrier Jump Jet Turns 50

Submitted

Detail shots of the Boeing (Mcdonnell Douglas) AV-8B Harrier, which turns 50 this year. The first Sea Harrier flew in 1967, while the AV-8Bs, which are significantly redesigned from the original Hawker Harrier of the 60s, first flew in 1985. The US Marine Corps plans to operate the Harrier until at least 2025; the F-35B model is slowly replacing it. This jet still uses water injection, creating dark clouds of smoke during high-power maneuvers. (www.youtube.com) More...

The Smithsonian channel has had a good program on the Harrier.
