Nasty Autopilot Secrets

Submitted

As you probably know, every major airline and lots of the not so major ones capture flight data and use it as part of safety reporting programs — pilots refer to them as “snitch systems.” Any time there's a deviation of any kind, the system automatically reports it and, understandably, identifies the pilot behind the misdeed. Not every mistake or oversight is going to get you busted, but there are a lot of them that will. Some will get you fired. The fairness of such a system is open to… (www.flyingmag.com) More...

I hate when these magazines showcase their writers as someone of authority! This guy "in my opinion" is fairly negligent in the fact that he fails to mention the fact that you are required to use the autopilot while in RVSM airspace........Or maybe he doesn't know!!!!!!!

Light GA guys seldom make it to RVSM airspace. thats who he is pointing to in the article.

Mostly maybe, but he refers to turbine Jet aircraft......and I quote:

"A big exception is when I fly airplanes for flight reviews. It's then that the joy of hand-flying a new airplane, whether piston single or a high-flying twinjet, greatly outweighs the benefits of pushing the buttons and reclining the seat a notch."

Neither are accidents. We're experiencing some of the safest years in aviation in our lives at the moment. I, for one, welcome our glass cockpit overlords in commercial aviation.

He grossly oversimplified the reason AFR447 crashed. It wasn't just ineffective hand-flying, it was also ineffective CRM and other technical issues inherent in Airbus aircraft. AAR214 was also ineffective CRM due to the cultural mores among many Asian countries, including deference to superiors and elders.

Overall, this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
