Most people don't realize how difficult it is to fly that far apart in formation. I flew F-86D' and F-102's in the fifties and sixties and my instructors would have failed me if I maintained that much separation in formation. They wanted two to three feet of wing overlap for wingmen and two to three feet of your nose under the lead if you flying slot. The further apart you get the harder it is to maintain position. Remember though this type of formation flying is for training and/or show not combat.
