According to Mr. Joe Baugher's published information, this Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane was originally built for the U.S. Army as a CH-54B Tarhe, and assigned U.S. Army s/n 69-18482, Sikorsky c/n 64090. He notes a later change to "civilian registry as N171AC".

The FAA registry shows N171AC as an Erickson S-64F, s/n 64090, which indicates it is a CH-54B re-manufactured and upgraded to S-64F Aircrane status by Erickson. The type certificate and manufacturing rights to this design are owned and held by Erickson, Inc.

As of 09 November 2016, Erickson, Inc. and certain subsidiaries voluntarily filed for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court (Northern District of Texas, Dallas Division). The company has stated that normal operations are expected to continue without interruption.
