Fantastic shot! I never knew these things carried water for ballast, is that a centre of gravity thing, can it be moved around, front to back etc? How much water are we talking about...? Sorry for the questions, learn something new everyday!

Mark - it's primarily used for racing. Basically, the heavier you are, the faster you can glide...but the slower you can climb. Being able to change your weight allows you to adapt your strategy to weather conditions.

I have no idea about the JS1, but the Duo Discus carries about 50 gallons (400 lbs).
