Qantas overhauls frequent flyer scheme: new zone-based earnings, less points for Oneworld partners

Submitted

A dramatic shake-up of the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme sees points and status credits move to a zone-based earning chart, with up to 50% less status credits for Oneworld partners, while the airline has also stealthily removed some of the high-earning award seats favoured by frequent flyers. The free ride is, literally, over. Why nit pick at what class each ticket is, just drop the granting of frequent flier credits to all but the full fare paying customer - it's the ultimate end game of the airlines anyway. 20 years ago you could fly pretty much 3 RT coast to coast and get one free one after that. On SW you could get free flights even quicker by simply flying 300 mile hops between MDW and STL a couple of times a week. Not any more. Flying was never a chore for me, but it was never a pain either. Now, going to an airport and getting on a plane is like going to the mall on the weekend after Thanksgiving - and nobody wants to check their bags.
