This reporting is TOTALLY in accurate. He was taxing out for his morning departure, got distracted and taxied all 3 gear into the mud. He was never on the Runway or even close at that point.

Yeah, but to the public, anything on the airport that an airplane is on is a runway. It could be in a hangar, but it's on the runway...

clip another plane while taxiing and it becomes a mid-air collision and the public wanting to know why controllers let the two planes get so close together....lol

One question, HOW DO YOU TAXI INTO A TARMAC?
btweston
btweston 1
OH, JEEZ, I DON'T KNOW. THEY PROBABLY MEANT "on" the tarmac. They DIDN'T WRITE "into," by ThE wAy.

Funny..... Only one airport in the world still has "tarmac" as it's paving material and that is Wick Airport in Scotland. The correct term is "ramp" or "apron"

Every still calls them "tarmac" none the less... We have alot of in accurate terms in this country.

Is being distracted while "driving" on the ground, like my daughter being distracted driving down the road texting?
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
One point a lot of people miss is that distracting doesn't mean you are texting, but if you are texting you are distracted. Point in case here alot of people are saying that the captain was texting, and that is not part of the truth here. He was distracted.... Not sending a text message... I am glad all you folks here are on his Jury... He would have already been hung out to dry.

Nobody said he was texting! If you're moving on the ground and get distracted long enough that you run off the pavement, you should have backed off the gas and hit the brakes before all the gear hit the mud. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

There has been a lot of finger pointing going on in this discussion... Just making a point. This reply could have gone to any of them.
WALLACE24

Regardless of what has been said here, I bet somebody in that cockpit will get hung, rightly or wrongly. Luckily in the scheme of things it's not that big a deal but can certainly be a negative career enhancement.

Very True... And the longer the plane stays out of revenue service, the worse it will be on them. There was a logbook item for a communications problem. Not sure how that will play into the roll of things. But even with that to taxi all the gear well into the grass is a distraction of the greatest magnitude.

From our local airport source they had comm issues while headed out to the runway and got distracted. they never were on the runway.
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
If they had com issues, he never mentioned it to maintenance. Any issues he had were from something not related to hardware of the aircraft.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 2
Is it SOP to run the plane in the grass if you have a com issue? Or is that the best excuse that came to mind? Where is that auto-taxi when you need it? Damn!
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
There were COM issues with one of the radios. Info came in later and was not part of the original report.

how exactly do you get distracted while taxing for takeoff? not enough coffee I guess.

Texting? Playing Angry Birds? Working on retirement options?

I hate to rain on your parade old man but your ABC link is just about identical to the posted story. Ain't a mention in either one of them that talks about a taxiway or the flight crew getting distracted.
