Setting aside the preflight check for a moment, how does the pilot of a taildragger not notice that hte rudder gust lock is still in place?

I am wondering the same thing...how do you taxi or get through the first 100 feet of a takeoff roll? Once they were airborne it should've been good enough until an attempted landing.

Looks a lot like the crash into a tree that was videoed. Both seemed like they may have run out of gas immediately after takeoff, maybe after forgetting to switch on any fuel tanks.

NTSB: Control Lock Still In Place On Charred Wreckage

The initial investigation into the fatal Sunday morning plane crash at Taunton Municipal Airport points to a potential problem with the aircraft’s gust lock, although authorities still don’t know for certain what caused the wreck, a federal investigator said Monday.
