Nice landing. Pipers are fixable.

Wonder why the pilot chose to make a gear up landing on a major expressway? It would seem that a gear down landing would have provide more control to avoid traffic after touchdown and perhaps allowed for the aircraft to be flown out if a satisfactory repair could have been made. The aircraft will probably have to be disassembled for removal as it undoubtedly sustained some damage.

It's a fixed gear airplane (1966 Piper PA-28-180). Gear-up landing isn't an option! The plane lost power and was gliding in, and one of the witnesses said they clipped the tree tops. I'd venture to guess that they landed hard and collapsed the gear after hitting the trees.

Michael, looks like gear was down and succumbed to extreme pressure and collapsed on impact. Check out Daily News page on the incident http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/small-plane-emergency-landing-major-deegan-expressway-article-1.1566379
