Virgin Atlantic to phase out its Boeing 747 fleet by 2021

One more operator is set to phase out its Boeing 747 fleet. British carrier Virgin Atlantic has announced that it would start a gradual removal of its Boeing 747-400s by 2021. Virgin Atlantic currently has eight 747-400 in its fleet. The company owns only three of them. The remaining five jumbo jets are leased from the American lessor GECAS. Over the years Virgin Atlantic has operated 37 Boeing 747s, all but eight having now let the fleet along with all but 6 of the 30 Airbus 340s. The replacements are 17 787-9s, all now delivered, an d 10 Airbus 350-900s, none yet received. They have dropped their order for A380s: they have been one of Boeing's better customers over the years.
