Only once while flying with my daughter did we not get seats together before the flight. The gate attendants were more than happy to find someone to switch seats so my daughter could sit with me.

This is such a silly issue.

So can you pay more to not sit with your kids?

The airline is just trying to make money, just like every other business on the planet. They are capitalizing on the fact that most people who are getting tickets together, want to sit together, thus charging them more to do so.
