Top 8 Reasons to Name Las Vegas Airport After Howard Hughes.
LAS VEGAS -- All this talk among Clark County politicians and civic leaders about renaming McCarran International Airport by inserting Las Vegas in the title is overlooking the one person who did far more than any other former Southern Nevada resident to advance aviation -- Howard Hughes. Yes, the reclusive late billionaire was a former owner of KLAS-TV Channel 8, so there's a little bias here. It sounds like a lot of people in the article's comments are displeased that the city is spending time now, and the money later, on changing the name in the first place.
They're taking the time and spending, then change it.
If Clark County were looking to change because the namesake isn't well known enough, then considering inserting another well known name makes sense. But that's not what they are doing. They are saying that being called McCarran is somehow costing them business.
Really? Does anyone outside of the aviation community or the Las Vegas area even use the McCarran name? When your average leisure traveler goes looking for air fare they type in the City name, which in this case is in no danger of a recognition problem. Fortunate for them, what happens there doesn't just stay there.
For a City of this size, there are very few reasons to worry about the name. One is confusion among airports in a given city; i.e. Houston, Dallas, Chicago, New York, etc. The other is an airport, such as Burbank Bob Hope Airport, that may not be fully recognized across the country. Burbank, Long Beach and John Wayne are competing against name recognition against Los Angeles.
Otherwise, this is a total waste of time and energy.

Seems silly to me to change a perfectly good name that describes WHERE the airport is.
The airport is not in McCarran.
Well put, Chip.
But this brings up the question of which person was more influential to aviation in Las Vegas: The person who brought an airline there, or the person who authored and legislated for the bill that brought us aviation as we know it today?
I'm for the latter.
