World’s first-ever unmanned airport control tower

Submitted
AP In an era where pilot error is the leading cause of commercial airline accidents, a Swedish airport is testing an unmanned control tower. And Australia may soon follow suit. The commercial planes landing at the remote Ornskoldsvik Airport are instead watched by cameras, guided in by controllers viewing the video at another airport nearly 150 kilometres away. Interesting, the explosion of technical advances is amazing.

My concern would be the loss of situational awareness. the camera is not going to pick up that quick glint in the corner of your eye that might alert you to an aircraft not where it is supposed to be flying through your final approach path. And with the zooming in and out a camera you lose the quick jump between focus a particular aircraft and big picture movements around you. I'm sure the experts have gone over these details I would like to see a demo of how it all really works.

The article notes that mics were added to provide ambient sound of the aircraft as the controllers became disoriented w/o that feedback. That makes me wonder about the number of controllers involved in the initial system design. That is an all too common error I've seen in technology projects.
