Tuesday marks 55 years since cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. In Russia, April 12 is known as Cosmonautics Day. Thank you Yuri for your bravery. I know being young and bullet-proof helps but that was one hell of a chance to take sitting on the nose of a rocket that had a propensity to explode. And if that didn't happen, several capsule systems were untested. The Russians thought it was dangerous enough to never let him go into space again for fear of losing a national hero too soon. Alas, they did but manned space missions were underway.

Wasn't he the poster boy for the event and someone else actually went up?

Never heard That one. But with the Soviets it would not be surprising. If you locate anything on that I would be interested in reading it.

So many stories and publications but supposedly two Cosmonauts made it into space and never returned then Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Sergeyevich Ilyushin made a successful flight but returned in a deranged mental state so Yuri was made the poster boy. The trouble is there is nothing official and hard to trust the many internet sites.
