This is a very wise move by DELTA AIRLINES. It gives theme greater route flexibility on 4 hour flights. That covers most of the USA and CANADA. Additionally the fuel savings is about 20% to 25% when compared with a similar model there is no comparison. Hands down the A220 wins every time!

I flew on this airplane for the first time last week and it is very very comfortable in coach. Delta and Jetblue are on to something here!

is it beyond boeing's expertise to duplicate this machine? Or even to surpass it?

They could have bought for very little money, but they tried to kill it instead by practically giving their B737s away to any airline that looked at possibly buying the CSeries. By doing so, they pushed it into the Airbus fold without any money coming out of Airbus. Now, let them eat their heart out.

No because they would install some additional Boeing crap into the whole range of guidance computers and a bunch of un-necessary sub-programs. Remember the QUANTAS engine fire was handled properly because Airbus gave them the tools to recover the largest commercial aircraft in history. The computers helped the crew to figure out how much damage they sustained. Airbus emergency procedures is handled by the onboard emergency computer program, it worked the pilots had time. The Boeing Max 8 gave their pilots ZERO ASSISTANCE and about 5 minutes for the Boeing pilots that crashed.
