C-17s from JBER, McChord, Travis, and Hickam trained at night near Anchorage as part of Large Package Week, formerly known as Jump Week. Anyone know why the flares are colored? Almost look like fireworks.

Probably because color producing chemical cost less than white producing ones.

That would depend on what element(s) they're using for the flares. Different elements burn different colors.
