Why Wasn’t The Second Antonov An-225 Finished?
For people who have seen the colossal Antonov An-225 ‘Mriya’ in person, they know that they have been lucky to see an incredibly rare aircraft. As well as being known for the majesty of its sheer size, the An-225 draws significant attention wherever it goes due to there only being one production example in the world. While Antonov did start constructing a second example, this particular plane remains unfinished. Let’s take a look at why this is the case. (simpleflying.com) More...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
At this moment An-225 is bringing much needed medical supplies donated by Germany from Frankfurt to Windhoek. Namibia is in a big surge of Covid-19 cases, after being quite successful in controlling that first waves.
Correction, the flight was from Leipzig to Windhoek with a stopover in Accra.
For those who want to see more of this magnificent bird, here's an older FA squawk highlighting an outstanding photo essay about the AN-225:

The second craft is about 53% finished, but it is not really an AN225. More than likely they would name it AN230.
The major difference is the unfinished bird also has a rear cargo door much like the AN124 and will have a conventional tail. (Although both could change with them closing up the rear cargo door and/or giving it a T-tail) It will not have, or need, the double tail like the first as it wont be carrying a shuttle.

some substaintial entity must step up and fund the completion of this second an-225. FOr obvious reasons, the world needs this capacity from time to time, and if , GOd forbid, the 225 is taken out of service, there would be needless suffering. Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Warren BUffet and Jeff Bezos have more than enough spare change to do a huge civic good. Batter up !!! Then, tool up a third 225. THere is sufficient work for these huge birds, and more than enough rich folks to pay the bills, and who also need their images burnished some...
Oh yeah those billionaires just love contributing to the greater good…
FYI: gates and buffet have pledged to give away Billions of their wealth. Gates and his ex-wife have put hundreds of millions into vacines to cure diseases all over the world. Branson and Bezos have differing views on hairstyles.....
