NASA conducts flight formations over the Houston area
For the elite pilots of NASA's "high altitude program," their missions usually consist of flying between 55,000 and 63,000 feet capturing data above hurricanes. The aircraft took flight for a different purpose. For the first time, all three aircraft departed together and in formation, flew throughout Houston and the surrounding area. I believe that two pilots died that fateful day. The pilot in the F104 Starfighter and also the copilot of the XB70 who was sadly unable to eject.
I remember the last formation flight NASA conducted. June 8,1966 resulting in an expensive mid-air collision and the death of one pilot. NASA pilots should stick to high altitude solo flying and leave the formation flying to the experts who do it every day.
