Is it just the reporter that used DIA instead of DEN or was it somebody with SWA too?

I think this is common in Denver, they often refer to the airport as DIA for obviously Denver International Airport, instead of using its identifier. I don't know if it is a mistake or if they are just abbreviating the name.

It's abbreviating the name. Personally, I don't know why ICAO or the FAA didn't go with it, as it was pretty widespread when Stapleton was still going and was DEN then also.

I always thought that was kinda odd that they built a new airport on the prairie and didn't rebadge it. You are right on Preach, it was DIA all through the construction phase and Stapleton was going and it opened and all of a sudden it wasn't.
