UK Air operations have been disrupted, back to normal operation again

Submitted
UK air operations have been disrupted for quite some time today due to a technical issue at NATS, the National Air Transportation Service. As of 15:15 BST this issue has been resolved but delays will remian for quite some time impacting flights from and to the UK as well as flights crossing UK airspace. (www.bbc.com) More...

Having seen the interview with NATS CEO - "our systems could not understand the data being sent in" - or similar.
ie NATS software did not screen the input data for validity
The ABC for novice programming is "Screen the input data"
Reject invalid data - DO NOT LET IT INTO THE SYSTEM
Having been programming for many decades this looks to me like a total plonker error of not checking the input data thoroughly

Total egg on the faces of the NATS IT team

Huh. As a former FAA controller, I thought (sarcasm) privatizing ATC was "the answer". It's not. Systems fail, whether it's government or private industry, and when revenues are down, private industry takes shortcuts for profit. How many times has Southwest Airlines' crew scheduling system crashed? I have family that was stranded during the Christmas fiasco last year, it was a nightmare. Just keep that in mind the next time you hear the NAS (National Airspace System) in the U.S. needs to be privatized.
