This Plane Flies Itself to an Airport and Lands in an Emergency

THE AIRCRAFT PARACHUTE IS one of the coolest aviation safety technologies of recent years. In the event of trouble—an engine failure, a collision, loss of control—yank a lever, watch a chute blast out of the fuselage, and float safely to the ground. (www.wired.com) More...

Yeah, I can see it now, pilot has too much mexican food, has a gas elimination, knocking himself unconscious. Luckily, the aircraft has this system on board and it takes over, headed for the nearest airport which unluckily, happens to be Reagan National. Due to no comms with the aircraft, it accidentally penetrates restricted airspace and is shot down by the "men on the roof". The resulting wreckage falls onto the Mall and due to "unexpended gas"in the pilot from the El Grande Chimichanga meal (w/rice and beans) the explosion is twice as big as it would be normally. Collateral damage is horrific. Without this system, the pilot would have woken up in cruise flight after the aircraft has ventilated itself, embarrassed but wiser knowing flying and refried beans don't mix. :-)
