Spirit To Furlough Pilots; Defer Aircraft Deliveries Due To Cash Crunch
Spirit Airlines announced today that, to save cash, it will furlough 260 pilots and postpone Airbus aircraft deliveries scheduled from the second quarter of next year through 2026. The aircraft deliveries are scheduled to be deferred until 2030-2031. Deliveries scheduled from 2027 to 2029 are not affected. The pilot furloughs are scheduled to start September 1. First signs of trouble and time to jump ship to another airline for the pilots.
Spirit’s deferral of A320/321neo deliveries opens up some delivery positions in 2025 and 2026. United may be interested, since delivery timeline of their 737-10s is uncertain.
It’s so disturbing to see a government who thinks they have all the answers when they don’t even know the questions. Wonder what metric they were using when they killed the Jet Blue deal. Lots of folks gonna be looking for a new job now
Pilots should be fine based on market shortage of qualified flyers. If this is the start of the company's demise, other staff may have difficult times ahead.
My guess is that the desire all along was to be acquired.
Good luck to all.

Airline senior management certainly believed that a merger was the future. When that was denied they have had to recalibrate and attempt to determine their own best way forward. Good luck with that...the airline is the edtt of most jokes and only the Alaska panel blowout and series of United mishaps temporarily diverted attention from Spirit's horrible reputation as the airline of last resort.
The hideous yellow paint job does not help either.

Much deserved.
