13-0335 — - Canadian Armed Forces Hercules CC-130H 130335 during training flight out of CFB Trenton, Ontario, Canada. The aircraft was on a very short final for runway 24 and to capture this shot, I used 1/15th second to get the prop blur. The landing gear was down but was cropped out of the photo.

1/15th hand held Dave? Very nicely done. This inspires me to try some different shots...

Dave Sheehy: Yes, 1/15th second seems to be the magic number to get the entire disc if the rpm is lower during landing. Might get away with a bit faster shutter speed if the aircraft is taking off. I have two methods at 1/15th second... stand very still with elbow tucked in to chest with the arm that supports the lens and use continuous mode on your shutter selection. You will get a burst of shots while you pan the aircraft going by and for me anyway, most will still be a bit blurry. Thankfully though, there are usually one or two that turn out sharp and properly focused. I try to focus on the cockpit front windshield, similar to focusing on the eyes of a person when doing portrait photography. The second method is to put a pillow on the roof of my car and swivel as you pan the passing aircraft. This method can be limiting though because sometimes you need to lift the camera to keep it in your viewfinder. I hope this helps!
