This is a great shot of wingtip vortices! Look at the rotation of each side. On a big bird like this A330 one needs to trail by five miles and then be careful not to fly into the vortices. Worst time for me was trailing a a B767 by five miles in our DC9 when we were rolled 90 degrees to the left before full right aileron and spoilers brought us back to level flight. Good thing we were at 3000' AGL at the time. F/O was flying and I helped with the recovery.

As I understand it, wingtip devices (winglets) reduce the wingtip vortices by redirecting some of that energy into more lift.
