As you may have noticed, the Mustang has the Malcolm hood (same rounded canopy as the Spitfire, as it was a wartime modification to give the pilot more visibility.
Good old American ingenuity! Bet they didn't go through the Pentagon to get permission to do that.

the P-51C was faster than the P-51D because of less resistance over canopy. bubble caused extra drag

That is an awesome shot. It must of been awesome to hear those Rolls Royce Merlin's roaring overhead.
