Airbus A320 (N467UA) - For a fairly brief period of time back in the first few years of this century, United Airlines had not one and not two but three livery schemes. During these years, it was not at all unusual to see three United Airlines aircraft at adjacent gates, all with different liveries. As UA was gradually phasing out the "battleship" gray and dark blue paint scheme that featured the red and blue tulip on the tail, it was phasing in the larger Blue Tulip livery on its fleet. But UA was also launching a low cost subsidiary, which it named "Ted" (using the last three letters of the parent company name UniTED), and the aircraft in the Ted fleet wore the Yellow Tulip on the tail and the large Ted title on the front portion of the fuselage. This photo, taken eleven years ago, shows Ted's N467UA departing KRNO from runway 16R.

UAL's "Ted" subsidiary did not last very long. It began operating in 2004 and was discontinued just five years later in 2009.
Ted was launched by UA as a low cost subsidiary. It was primarily started to compete with low cost carrier Frontier. (Delta did the same thing at around the same time when it launched its own low cost subsidiary "Song" to compete with low cost carrier jetBlue.)
By the middle months of 2009, the aircraft in Ted's fleet (all Airbus) had been assimilated into UA's regular fleet and the Yellow Tulip livery seen in the photo above was gradually replaced by the standard Blue Tulip livery being used at that time. Of course, it was only a few years later when United merged with Continental and the Blue Tulip on the tail was subsequently replaced with the gold Continental tail design, which is now being replaced by the newest tail colors.
Sort of makes a person wonder how much $$ United has paid out for paint over the past 20 years (grin).
