Ultra-light liquid hydrogen tanks promise to make jet fuel obsolete

Submitted
A revolutionary cryogenic tank design promises to radically boost the range of hydrogen-powered aircraft – to the point where clean, fuel-cell airliners could fly up to four times farther than comparable planes running on today's dirty jet fuel. (newatlas.com) More...

Over-hyped headline. Jet fuel obsolete ? With electric fuel cells ? This is no more than a high school science project.

Wake us up when you can produce real thrust, lets say like a CFM 56. Or even a venerable JT-8D

Remember the Hindenburg! Hydrogen is very dangerous, any mistakes can and will be catastrophic. We used it on the space shuttle program for the very properties described here it's just very unforgiving!

Some would consider JET-A1 more dangerous than LH2, because it has a higher energy density.

My skepticism is the fuel cell aspect. I dont see nearly enough thrust to get speed and range like modern single aisle jets. short range low speed commuter a/c maybe.

As to safety of electric fuel cells, the Apollo 13 fuel cell experience was immortalized

Gasoline is also extremely dangerous, yet Americans use millions if gallons of it every day.
