A Russian jet doing service btwn Moscow and LAX had to make an emergency landing in Iqaluit. I'm told by my relatives, she's doing fine. (hisz.rsoe.hu) More...

Just try the same thing in Russian airspace without clearance. Emergency or not.

Who says it didn't have clearance? Of course it did. It was flying through Canadian air space on its planned and approved route.

Many polar flights traverse Russian airspace every day. A passenger medical emergency would yield the same result there.
